Writing Guidelines
Writing Exercises

These guidelines arose from a writing workbook developed in the late 1980s by Michael Alley and Christene Moore at the University of Texas at Austin. Used to teach writing to hundreds of engineering students during the 1990s, this workbook was continually revised. Beginning in the mid-1990s, several editing suggestions were incorporated from the following people: Dr. Leslie Crowley at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Professor Gisela Kutzbach and Dr. Laura Grossenbacher at the University of Wisconsin at Madison; and Dr. Jeff Donnell from Georgia Tech. In 1999, the Writing Guidelines site was placed on-line at Virginia Tech. In 2007, the site moved to Penn State.

Currently, the Writing Guidelines site is edited by Michael Alley, who is an Associate Professor of Engineering Communication at Penn State. Sponsored primarily by the Leonhard Center in the College of Engineering at Penn State, the site receives more than 1 million visits each year.
